Title: Opinions of training methods used in the hospitality industry: A call for review
Abstract: Training methods and tools used to enhance or communicate training subject matter can greatly affect the effectiveness of training programs. Those methods and tools that are traditional in nature such as lecture-to-group, on-the-job, and video taped training programs have been used by the hospitality industry for many years. It has been suggested that using these methods and tools are not as effective for some positions and particular subjects are more innovative training technologies. This article presents the opinions of training directors at the corporate level and trainers at the property level of current training methods and tools currently used. Those interviewed also discuss their opinions of training technologies and whether the organization they represent has plans for its use. The results indicate that there are differences in opinion of current training program effectiveness and what should be done to improve it between those training executives at the corporate level and those trainers at the property level. Also shared are opinions as to improving training program planning, implementation, overall management, and tools to enhance training presentation. The appendix provides examples of several strategies being used in the industry at present.
