Title: The boiling paradox in binary liquid mixtures
Abstract: The curious coincidence has been studied of a previously observed increase in the nucleate boiling peak flux density and a slowing down of vapour bubble growth, which results in a diminished direct vapour formation at the heating surface. This paradox occurs generally in any boiling system, which is characterized by small bubbles generated at a high frequency, e.g. in binary systems at a certain low concentration of the more volatile component. The concentration follows from equilibrium data only. The author's "relaxation microlayer" theory explains the boiling paradox. Nucleate boiling is described as a relaxation phenomenon of the superheated thermal boundary layer, which is periodically pushed away from the wall due to the rapid initial growth of succeeding bubbles on nuclei. Expressions for the adherence and delay times, the bubble frequency, the departure radius, the vaporized mass and diffusion fractions at the heating surface, and the peak flux density could thus be derived. A criterion for the onset of film boiling has been formulated in terms of the "region of influence" of a bubble. The effects of wetting and nucleation are established and incorporated in the theoretical treatment. The proposed mechanism is in agreement with observed temperature fluctuations at the heating surface nearby active sites, and with schlieren photographs taken from the literature. The theoretical predictions are in quantitative agreement with experimental data deduced from high speed motion pictures and from boiling curves on platinum wires for water-2-butanone and water-1-butanol mixtures. In addition, the theory has been extended to surface (or local) boiling with free convection. The peak flux and the maximum radius, the frequency, the growth and subsequent condensation rates, and the lifetime of bubbles could be expressed in relation to the superheating of the wall and the degree of subcooling of the bulk liquid. Also, a direct experimental verification of the common physical background underlying the various bubble growth theories and the relaxation microlayer model is given. For this purpose, instantaneous local temperature measurements with a thin-wired thermocouple have been synchronized with a high speed motion picture of vapour bubbles generated at active nuclei in close proximity to the hot junction.
