Title: Dynamics Simulation of Heavy Haul Locomotive with Radial Bogie
Abstract: The heavy haul locomotive with self-steering radial bogie is simulated to understand curving performance. In this paper, some conditions such as curve radius, the rail surface state, and traction are considered. The simulated results indicate that curving performance of two types of locomotives is significantly influenced by curve radii. When the curve radius is less than 700 m and the locomotive traction is supplied, flange contact occurs on the lead wheelset in the radial bogie, but the small steering force and small angle of attack together can reduce wheel-rail wear of locomotive on curve. The rail surface state and the traction also have significant influence on the curving performance of locomotive with the radial bogie. When rail surface is in a poor state and the locomotive needs to provide large traction, sanding or other measures are taken to enhance the rail surface friction coefficient.
