Title: Predictive categories in university textbooks
Abstract: This paper reports on research based on a corpus drawn from a law textbook, applying a model of discourse analysis previously designed by the author for an economics textbook. It was found that the six Predictive Categories underpinning the model were generalizable and that they provided an adequate description of the data. However, the analysis of the data in terms of the frequencies, distributions and functions of these Predictive Categories has helped to shed some light on variations between economics and law within the textbook genre. More research of this type would broaden our understanding of which features are shared between various disciplines within one particular genre, and which are shared between genres within the same discipline.
