Title: The isolation of tubercle bacilli from captive wild animals
Abstract: The type of infecting bacillus was determined in seven captive wild animals (including one bird). Three bovine and four human strains of tubercle bacilli were recorded. One of the bovine and two of the human strains appeared to be of less than standard virulence. Attention is drawn to the fact that in lupus, and in tuberculosis of horses and of captive wild animals, a considerable proportion of strains isolated have been of subnormal virulence. This finding is in marked contrast with the almost uniformly high virulence of strains isolated from other tuberculous lesions in man, and from tuberculous cows and pigs.
