Abstract: A clinical study of the usefulness of Benemid® to improve opacification of the biliary tract following intravenous cholangiography was performed. Forty patients were selected on the basis of having an unsatisfactory cholangiogram because of absent or faint nondiagnostic visualization. Twenty patients received a placebo and twenty patients received 0.5 Gm Benemid®, 4 Gm, qid, for two days following the initial examination. Forty-eight hours after the initial examination, a repeat intravenous cholangiogram was performed. The differences in mean visualization after repeat intravenous cholangiography between the group receiving Benemid® and the group receiving she placebo were not statistically significant (0.7 < P < 0.8). The study in man supports the conclusions of Fischer, which were based upon experiments in dogs, that Benemid® does not improve the visualization of the biliary tract by intravenous cholangiography.
