Title: On physical symmetries and the generalized Carruthers theorem
Abstract: It is shown that in a theory of several scalar, real, local fields forming an irreducible set, local with respect to each other and transforming according to the same representation of the Poincare group with a mass gap, each abstract “physical” symmetry group implemented unitarily has an n-dimensional representation which can be made real by applying a suitable unitary transformation. As a corrolary follows the Carruthers theorem for boson fields. For the case of SU(3) only 1, 8, 27 etc. dimensional representations can occur. For the case of 2n real fields one can use a subgroup of SO(2n) with respect to which the fields split into two pair-conjugate multiplets.
