Title: Enhanced spectral selectivity in time-resolved measurements by laser quenching of adjacent hyperfine levels
Abstract: A method has been developed for measuring lifetimes of selective hyperfine levels in atomic ions using fast-ion-beam laser spectroscopy. Localised Doppler tuning was used in a collinear geometry to determine the lifetimes of each hyperfine sublevel in the 6p 4P5/2 state of 129Xe+ and 131Xe+. Optical pumping enhanced by saturation broadening was introduced prior to the excitation region to isolate transitions in the congested hyperfine multiplet of 131Xe for these measurements. Applications of this technique are discussed, with particular emphasis on investigations of hyperfine induced mixing.
