Title: UK hospitality and tourism SMEs: differentiation by size, location and owner style
Abstract: This article reports on a UK government-funded study aimed at identifying best practice tourism and hospitality SME operators. Eighty-nine separate businesses from all over the UK formed the case studies for this research, made up of a sample of hotels, pubs, restaurants, leisure operations, and visitor attractions. A key outcome of the study has been to identify the extent to which best practice varies between SMEs and the reasons for this. It is concluded that differences could be identified on the basis of three factors – size, location, and owner style. The implications of this are then discussed.
