Title: Tethyan-Boreal connection: influence on the evolution of mid-Cretaceous planktonic foraminiferids
Abstract: The distribution of mid-Cretaceous planktonic foraminiferal assemblages seem to reflect biogeoprovinciality and environmental conditions in the Tethyan, Boreal and transitional domains. Separation versus connection of Tethyan and Boreal waters apparently influenced ecological conditions and consequently evolutionary processes in both realms. The compositional changes in foraminiferal assemblages are correlated with mid-Cretaceous global events and eustatic sea-level fluctuations. The appearance of keeled planktonic foraminifera during the mid-Cretaceous is related to sea-water temperature and density, probably in response to the existence of Tethyan-Boreal connections.
