Abstract: Progress in diagnosis, prevention of diseases, treatment of exposed pulp, root canal treatment, retreatment and surgery is reported. Contemporary biological research techniques could set the foundation for a more rational approach to treatment. Pulp inflammation may be prevented by inhibiting bacteria from colonising dentine surfaces. Specific factors could be synthesised to stimulate normal dentine deposition over pulp exposures. Significant improvements have been made in instruments and techniques available for root canal treatment and surgery but there is no clinical evidence that they improve periapical healing.
