Title: Effectiveness of road work speed limit signs
Abstract: This paper examines the effect of various types of works speed limit signs on vehicles entering the work area and attempts to relate the entry speed to both the alignment of the road on which the approach is made and the associated approach speeds. There is a clear indication that work area speed limits reduce vehicle speed on entry into the work zone; however, the large majority of drivers still exceed the speed limit posted. There is some evidence that larger signs in good condition can increase effectiveness, but no indication that proposed new format signs with white backgrounds had any different effect than current Victorian format signs of the same size and condition.
