Abstract: To determine relationships between infant axillary and rectal temperatures taken with a glas thermometer and telethermomenter, 30 infants between one and nine days of age were tested in their bassinets in a nursery. Four temperature readings were taken for each infant, with each thermomenter being held in place for five minutes. The testing of each infant took place within a 15-minute period. With the glass thermometer, axillar temperatures ranged from 96.0° to 99.4° F; rectal temperatures, from 97.2° to 99.8°F. With the telethermometer, axiliary temperatures ranged from 92.0° to 100.7°F; rectal temperatures, from 92.0°F to 101.0°. A t-test revealed significant differences between axillary and rectal temperatures with the glass thermometer (t =9.65, p. < 0.1), Both glas thermometer and telethermometer axillar (t = 4.33, p < .01) and rectal (t = 4.70, p. < 0.1) readings were found to be significantly different. The taking of the axillary temperature was recommended.
