Title: Ultrasonic absorption measurements in mammalian tissues
Abstract: The ultrasonic absorption coefficient has been determined by the transient thermoelectric technique as a function of frequency in the range 0.5–7 MHz, for a number of mammalian tissues and organs. Results indicate that (1) appreciable differences may exist between the coefficients of absorption and attenuation, (2) absorption coefficients of widely varying tissue types and species differ from one another less than do the corresponding attenuation coefficients, and (3) the frequency dependencies of absorption and attenuation are similar. The possible relationship between absorption and attenuation processes which occur in biological tissue is examined in light of these results.
