Title: CITY SAVES BY USING RECYCLED ASPHALT AS BASE
Abstract: Article describing the process undertaken in El Cajon, California to utilize recycled asphalt for road improvements. The decision to reconstruct Main Street was made when it became obvious that the original decomposed granite base was breaking down. The traffic volumes on Main Street during construction dropped by one third as some motorists sought alternative routes. El Cajon has been very positive about the experience of using recycled asphalt and concrete paving materials, and the first phase of the project won the Small Project of the Year award from the local American Public Works Association chapter in 1990.
