Title: The influence of intense ion beams on the density of supersonic jet gas targets
Abstract: Abstract The influence of intense ion beams on the density of a supersonic jet gas target along the ion beam path has been investigated for dissipated powers in the gas ranging from 7.8 mW/mm up to 4.0 W/mm. No effects have been observed in contrast to static gas targets where a significant reduction in gas densities arises already at dissipated powers above 10 mW/mm. Thus, for high beam currents such as in storage rings and/or for high gas densities a supersonic jet gas target is clearly superior to a static gas target.
