Title: Indirect measurement of thorium-228 and radium-224 by high resolution alpha spectrometry
Abstract: In all recommended procedures for thorium isotope determination by alpha spectrometry, corrections for chemical recoveries are made by the introduction of a tracer such as 234Th, 227Th or 229 Th. Each has limitations that are enhanced by the presence of chemical interferences such as rare earth elements. This paper descibes a successful technique of indirect measurement of thorium isotopes by the determination of 224Ra using 133Ba as a tracer. Consideration is given to the factors that influence accuracy and precision of the method. Data pertaining to its application for the analysis of uranium mine tailings and the associated environment is presented.
