Title: Radiocesium Retention by Rats As Affected by L-thyroxine and Propylthiouracil
Abstract: This paper presents results on the possible relationship of the thyroid to the whole body retention of radiocesium. The procedure used was to follow the decline in the body burden of radiocesium with time when the animals were fed diets containing z-thyroxine or propylthiouracil. The results showed that z-thyroxine increased the decline of the radiocesium body burden while propylthiouracil slowed it. Thyroxine was found to interact with temperature increasing the loss of radiocesium by a factor of 5 when the rats were kept at 32°C and by about 2 when the rats were at 4°C. Propylthiouracil promoted the retention of radiocesium at 4° by a factor of 1.7 and at 32° by a factor of 1.4. Adrenalectomy tended to counter the action of thyroxine administration and tended to supplement the action of propylthiouracil.
