Abstract: Polydactyly is a relatively uncommon occurrence in the human. It has been grouped into three categories by Nelson (1963): (1) Supernumerary digits outside the normal confines of the hand or foot. (2) Duplication of existing digit or digits by longitudinal splitting. (3) Extra digits occurring within the normal limits of the hand or foot. Supernumerary digits have been classified into four groups: (1) where the extra digit is attached loosely by a narrow pedicle to the hand, foot or another digit; (2) a well-developed digit articulating with the head or sides of a metacarpal, metatarsal or a phalanx and free at its extremity; (3) a fully developed separate digit; and (4) an extra digit united intimately with another digit and possessing its own metacarpal or metatarsal or articulating with the head of the metacarpal common to it and the digit with which it is fused.
