Title: The Particle Size Distributions of Woolscour Liquors
Abstract: The particle size distributions for scour liquors have been measured using a Coulter counter. Commercial wool scour liquors have a bimodal distribution, with one maximum below 1 μm and another in the range 5-10 μm. It is likely that the smaller particles are from the weathered tips of the wool and the larger from the (unweathered) base of the wool. During the continuous cycling of woolscour liquor through centrifuges, the larger particles are preferentially removed, and partially coalesced during the formation of the woolgrease cream.
