Title: Modelling Airbus Flight using a Circuit Design language
Abstract: Abstract We have conceived and developed a simulator modelling the behaviour of the A320 Airbus. The model is written in VHDL, Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Design Language, to allow a VLSI circuit to run the model onboard an aircraft. We designed the model from aerodynamic first principles using International Standard Atmosphere parameters interacting with aircraft characteristics. The pilot subsystem provides primary input and output, the flight control subsystem provides manoeuvre envelope protection, the environment subsystem provides weather input, the aircraft subsystem interprets pilot and environmental inputs into motion and the sensors subsystem extracts realistic parameters from the environment subsystem. The graphical front end written in Java demonstrates that the simulator can provide an effective tool for an aircraft engineer. When the model is represented in silicon it will offer potential for real time use onboard an aircraft.
