Abstract: More than thirty years have passed since composition became Composition (North 9)?enough time for the discipline to have recognized its own tacit tradition (Emig, Tacit 147), identified its own set of forefathers and mothers, produced two or three additional generations of scholars, and developed an ever-increasing number of intellectual disagreements. Along with this evolution of the discipline has come a preoccupation with disciplin ary self-definition. In books and essays, Andrea Lunsford, Steve North, Louise Wetherbee Phelps and others have identified what they believe to be composition's characteristic modes of inquiry and outlined what they under stand to be its theoretical framework.
