Abstract: The retiming of traffic signals is one of the most cost effective means of improving traffic flow along a highway corridor. This article provides an overview of the importance and benefits of signal retiming, and discusses how this type of traffic engineering maintenance can significantly reduce delays and stops experienced by automobile drivers, thus improving safety and reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Typically, the benefit to cost ratio for signal retiming is approximately 40:1.
