Title: Effect of Solutionizing, Artificial Ageing and Thermo Mechanical Treatment (TMT) on Hardness and Toughness of Al 6XXX Alloy
Abstract: Artificial ageing treatment will enhance the strength of the material by precipitation process as the second phase. Thermo mechanical treatment will give enhanced strain in the boundary layer and thus refining grain by increasing the nucleation sites. In this paper an effort has been made to find the effect of artificial ageing and thermo mechanical treatment on the hardness and toughness of the 6XXX Aluminium alloy. Aluminium alloys are widely used in automobile industries, marine applications, railways etc. Al 6XXX shows high weight to strength ratio and good corrosion resistance. Brienell hardness test has been carried out by using 5mm steel ball indenter with a load of 250 Kgf. The temperatures for ageing treatment were 100OC and 200OC each. The mechanical work is done by cold rolling process with deformations of 10%, 20% and 30% for thermo mechanical treatment. The hardness was studied in order to find the suitable temperature range and deformation to increase the hardness. An increase in hardness was found out while ageing at 100OC than 200OC but the time to get peak hardness is lesser at 200OC. Thermo mechanical treatment (TMT) gives higher hardness compared to age hardening. Also impact tests were carried out using charpy V-notch test in heat treated specimen and the results were discussed. In all the tests performed 5 trials are conducted and the average of three consistent values is considered as result output.
