Title: Investigation of truck lane restriction on motorways
Abstract: In 2010, Victoria became the first Australian jurisdiction to restrict heavy vehicles from the right lane on sections of freeways. In response to community concern, the Victorian Government announced the truck lane restrictions on the Princes Highway from Melbourne to Geelong and along the Eastern Freeway. Interest then turned to the Monash Freeway. Unlike the other freeways, the Monash Freeway is a managed freeway with ramp metering, relatively short distances between ramps and a very large and constant volume of both commercial and passenger vehicle traffic. This paper investigates the potential impact of truck lane restrictions on motorways, particularly a motorway with a configuration similar to the Monash Freeway. The study examined impacts on travel efficiency, road safety and fuel economy.
