I was a student at the University of the Witwatersrand in the early 1980s, but first registered for zoology and geography. During orientation week in 1981, I went to an Earth Sciences panel discussion where Tom was one of several academics given five minutes to persuade students that it would be a grave mistake to leave university without completing a course in their various disciplines.
