Title: Gender relations and livelihood strategies.
Abstract: This chapter looks at the ways in which changing farm household livelihoods are influencing and being influenced by evolving gender relations within Irish farm families. It focuses on household decision-making processes and the need to integrate individualist and household-oriented approaches. It draws on two European Commission-funded research projects, the first of which examined the uptake and potential of multifunctional agriculture or rural development activities within farm livelihoods. The second project, which focused on progressive rural communication, has been the basis for constructing a case study on Irish farm households, which looks at the role of internal household dynamics and communication with external networks in the household livelihood decision-making process.
