At the request of the USAF Airlift Center, aircrew fatigue and workload were evaluated in 4-man C-5A cockpit crews (aircraft commander, copilot, and 2 flight engineers) performing typical long-range transport missions on triple-INS-equipped aircraft. Most of the navigator's duties were assumed by the pilots with the balance assigned to the flight engineer station. Considering subjective fatigue and workload findings, discussions with crewmen, the workloads reported during emergencies and aerial refuelings, and the operational requirements of wartime conditions, it was recommended that the 4-man C-5A crew concept not be implemented at this time.
