Title: THE USE OF DYNAMIC CONE PENETROMETER (DCP) FOR ROAD STRENGTHENING DESIGN IN NORWAY
Abstract: Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) is an instrument designed for the rapid in situ measurement of the structural properties of existing pavements with unbound granular materials. This paper presents experiences from the use of DCP for pavement strengthening design in Norway. Comprehensive field investigations including damage surveys have been carried out on low volume roads with gravel base courses, and a preliminary criterion to check if the stability of the base layer is critical with regard to pavement performance has been developed. A CBR/DCP relationship for typical gravel base course materials has also been established. This paper also describes the design and construction of an Automatic Dynamic Cone Penetrometer.
