Abstract: Dry eye syndrome, also called keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a very common condition; its prevalence is up to 33% in the UK population, with women being 50% more likely to suffer from it than men. Furthermore, it remains difficult to treat since it can be difficult to achieve concordance between doctors and patients regarding therapy. The causes of dry eye are multifactorial and therefore the effective treatment needs to be nuanced. This article reviews the aetiology and management of dry eye.
