Title: High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) for Next Generation Video Applications
Abstract: The recent emergence of high resolution video content, such as high-definition and ultra high-definition, together with an increasingly broad range of content types has demanded highly efficient solutions for video coding. This chapter provides an overview of the new coding tools adopted in the emerging video coding standard, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). In particular, the coding units, prediction units, and transform units are discussed and their effect on the encoding of the new content types is evaluated. All experiments are based on the HEVC test model. The results show that HEVC has halved the bit-rate over the predecessor video coding standard, H.264/AVC, while maintaining the same video quality. The results also confirm the efficiency of the newly proposed tools in compressing the emerging next generation video content.
