After providing the theoretical background to the person- oriented approach, it discusses person-oriented methods that could be useful in research on developmental psychopathology. The chapter presents empirical examples that illustrate some of the methods, such as holistic-interactionistic perspective, configural frequency analysis, and the variable-oriented approach. It compares the measurement models for the variable- and the person-oriented approaches to studying development. A review of the concept of dimensional identity and structural equations modeling (SEM) is also presented. Finally, the chapter talks about issues in implementing a person-oriented research strategy and perspectives for future research. Perhaps the most important vehicle for promoting the person-oriented approach is a good training of young researchers in it.
