Title: Fault-tolerant design-to-specs with gramp & grams
Abstract: The ability to predict reliability, maintainability (R&M) and life cycle cost (LCC) for a new system during the concept and design stages is essential in both industry and government. Cost, reliability, and maintainability specifications are now routinely included in government system acquisition contracts. Both the government and the contractor require effective prediction tools to monitor and compare performance of alternative designs and support policies for preparation and evaluation of proposals, warranties and incentives. This paper describes a methodology for verifying reliability, maintainability and cost specifications for fault-tolerant systems during the concept and design stages. This method systematically and quantitatively factors the design, maintainability and support into the analysis while accounting for uncertainties through front-end sensitivity analyses. Applications of the methodology in Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) verification of electronic engine control system designs are discussed.
