Title: Evaluating road safety effects of driver assistant systems using instrumented vehicle and driving simulator
Abstract: Road safety effects are difficult to measure. Often this has been done by using evaluation research. This type of road safety research is often done over a longer time period and the results are often controversial. Experiments and quasi-experiments using instrumented vehicle or driving simulator are new tools that are available. In Norway, the project Wisecar has been started to develop a methodology for evaluation of driver assistance systems related to traffic flow and traffic safety (collision avoidance systems). This paper discusses preliminary results related to measuring safety effects of driver assistance systems using a driving simulator or an instrumented vehicle.
