Abstract: An assessment of geothermal energy technology is presented. Chapter 1 discusses the U. S. energy needs and consumption, and the history and characteristics of geothermal energy. Chapter 2 discusses the geologic structure of the Earth in relation to geothermal sources. The distribution and availability of geothermal resources in the USA and other parts of the world are discussed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 deals with geothermal exploration and drilling techniques. Geothermal power production systems for dry steam, wet steam, hot water and hot dry rock are discussed in Chapter 5. Non-electric applications of geothermal energy are discussed in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 discusses the design, operation, and economics of geothermal power plants. Chapters 8 and 9 deal with the environmental aspects of geothermal energy utilization. A glossary of geothermal energy terminology is presented in the appendices. 125 references. (LBS)
