Title: When Expectations and Justice Do Not Coincide
Abstract: Psychological theories of distributive justice, such as equity, exchange, and relative deprivation, offer a picture of an economic world that is, in its broad outlines, perceived as just. For example, drawing on an extensive and persuasive body of experimental research, Lerner (1980) found that people usually expect the world to be a just place and will go to great lengths to rectify perceived injustice. If behavioral rectification is not possible, people will generally use psychological means of maintaining a “just world” view, such as blaming rape victims for their misfortune.
