Abstract: As in other countries, accident reduction has been established practice within the Danish road authorities for many years. Road safety experts, studying accident black spots and designing low-cost safety improving measures, have obtained an extensive experience in what is safe and unsafe in road layout. Safety Audit is a formal procedure to bring this knowledge into the road planning and design process. The procedure originally in the U.K. The introduction of a formal system of discussing road safety matters on the design stage may in certain cases gives rise to strong reactions from the planning and design organizations. However, the management of the Directorate strongly supports the idea and expresses the view that safety audit has come to stay. Results of the evaluation study appeared June 1995.
