Title: Alternative vehicle fuels: problems and prospects
Abstract: Automobile manufacturers continue to look for alternatives to gasoline, but their immediate emphasis will be on making additional fuels acceptable to conventional engines. Natural gas and propane offer economic advantages for large fleets of vehicles. These fuels have few technical problems, although safety issues will limit siting and transport. The constraints on ethanol fuels make coal-based methanol more attractive as an alternative than ethanol fuels from agricultural bases. This will require a new infrastructure for distributing and marketing fuel, however, which will pose serious barriers. 2 figures. (DCK)
