Title: Some reactions of thionyl chloride and their application to the determination of sulphur chlorides in technical thionyl chloride
Abstract: Abstract A simple method of estimating the amounts of sulphur mono‐ and di‐chlorides in technical thionyl chloride is described. It has been shown that small amounts of sulphur chlorides in thionyl chloride are hydro‐lysed by excess of water to give polythionic acids. Iron catalyses a reaction between thionyl chloride and sulphur, producing sulphur mono‐chloride. The former reaction has been made the basis of a satisfactory analytical method and difficulties caused by the latter reaction have been overcome.
