Abstract: The city center is the main focus of surface and rapid transit lines in most U.S. cities. This paper shows how transit's share of CBD trips reflects the levels of downtown activity as measured by floor space and employment. Rapid transit ridership (commuter rail, heavy rail, light rail, and separated right of way BRT lines) relates closely to CBD employment levels - especially where there are more than 125,000 jobs. Increasing CBD employment, especially near rapid transit stations would further enhance ridership, and should be a focus of transit oriented development.
