Abstract: This chapter covers the survey for the period 1970-1990 and deals mainly with syntheses and reactions of monocarboxylic acids and their derivatives. The saturated monocarboxylic acids include—the formic acid and its derivatives, halides and cyanides of formic acid, HCOX esters of formic acid (formates), HCOOR, formamides, and HCAONR2. It is important to note, that formamide is not only a useful solvent, but also a valuable component in many synthetic sequences, notably the Bredereck reaction. This is presented with equations for the reader. Discussions are found for compounds containing hydrogen cyanide, HCN, saturated carboxylic acids and alkanoic acids, CnH2n+1COOH. The new methods for the esterification are reviewed in the topic named functional derivatives of carboxylic acids. A comprehensive review on the chemistry of dithiocarboxylic acid esters has recently been published and discussed in this chapter. The halogen substituted products of carboxylic acids are presented because of their importance in the preparation of α–halo acids. The extensive review of ortho esters is briefly provided.
