Title: Spectroscopic study of microturbulence in the atmosphere of Arcturus
Abstract: Microturbulence (ξ) in the atmosphere of Arcturus was spectroscopically investigated in order to determine the nature of the atmospheric velocity field as well as its relation to the abundance analysis. The conventional method which requires a consistency of abundances from equivalent widths of both unsaturated and saturated lines leads to an evident dependence of this parameter on the used line set : ξ decreases as the excitation potential or the ionization degree increases, which may be attributed to a depth dependence of this parameter that increases with height from ∼0.5 km/s to ∼2.2 km/s in the region 1 ≥ τ ≥ 10 −2
