Title: ROLES OF SPORT AND CULTURE IN PROMOTION OF SOCIAL HARMONY AND DEVELOPMENT
Abstract: The relationship between culture and sport began during the ancient Greece era. In some of the countries of the world, especially Nigeria, culture is interwoven with almost all sporting activities. Sport integrates with almost all cultural activities; political, economic, social, psychological, aesthetic, emotional and psychological aspects of life. Culture embraces all of the materials and non–material expressions of people as well as the processes with which these expressions are communicated. It also has to do with the entire social, intellectual, scientific, artistic and technological expressions and processes of a peoples usually ethnically and or nationally or supranational related, usually living in a geographically contiguous area. What they pass on to their successors and how these are passed on. Culture responds to changes since it is created by man through the process of adjustment to their social setting. It is an indispensable tool in the hands of those who mould the lives of the young ones and sometimes the old ones too. The paper is on the roles of sport and culture in promotion of social and harmony and development in Nigeria. The main thrust of the paper is to determine the influence of culture on sport. The paper equally examine the concept of culture, sport and sports administration; some aspects of cultural content in sports policies are here discussed. The paper makes use of existing data, archival materials and literature review to arrive at the conclusion. The paper recommends that; administrators should imbibe the culture of transparency, fair play, and sportsmanship when implementing various government policies for the purpose of transformation of sports in Nigeria as a whole.
