Title: Interpretation of the gamma-ray line emission of active galactic nuclei
Abstract: The 1.6- and 4.4-MeV ..gamma..-ray lines emitted by the radio galaxy Cen A may result from the excitation of nuclei by protons in the hot plasma behind the front of shocks emanating from an explosive energy release in the nucleus of the galaxy. Calculations of the 4.4-MeV luminosity produced by postshock proton excitation of /sup 12/C nuclei after explosions of typical energy indicate that such a mechanism may explain the Cen A ..gamma..-ray lines.
