It begins with the 1892 organizational meeting for the National League for Good Roads in Chicago and ends with the 1995 passage of the National Highway System Designation Act. Sidebars list the chief administrative officers from 1893 to 1996 for the agency that started out as the Office of Road Inquiry and eventually became the Federal Highway Administration, as well as the change in titles that the agency went through.
