Title: Elizabeth Sutherland / Elizabeth "Betita" Sutherland Martinez Bibliography, 1960-2013
Abstract: I WISH TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO TONY PLATT FOR GIVING ME THIS ONCE in a lifetime project. I have known Betita as a personal friend, mentor, and colleague throughout many years. Her indefatigable habit of radical thinking and writing influenced me greatly as I went through my graduate studies in sociology and then in library sciences. Over the years I have willingly served as her gofer--locating citations, sources, and images for her many projects. Yet, I never had the opportunity to closely navigate through her immense opus of writings. In my profession as a librarian I often provide instruction for various classes that require students to be imaginative as they scour the databases for relevant materials. I ask them to be thorough and judicious in the selection of works for their research projects, and they generally express dismay at the work I demand of them. In doing this project, I had to follow my own words of advice. I was driven by the knowledge that I know this author and that her work is important to me in so many ways. I began by providing bibliographic assistance to Tony and his research assistant Eduardo Bautista, and then suddenly I was seduced by the whole world of Betita. This bibliography has been an archeological project, rooted in the idea that people ought to know the profound contributions Betita has made. She is what we commonly refer to as a public intellectual. Her scholarly breadth reaches infinitely more people and covers more issues than the university-based work of most academic specialists. Many of her writings are used and cited by many people, but the more esoteric or difficult-to-access materials are often only alluded to. Perhaps my most treasured moment of this project was getting to see the transformation of her thought through the issues she addressed and the places where she published. Considering the wonders of today's technology, it was amazing to have to explore seemingly ancient modes of bibliographic sources. For example, for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) days, most sources are available only in microfilm and other leads had only partial information. In this bibliography, the dig is often only the beginning. I'm confident that I have excavated the majority of Betita's works; yet, given the variety of media in which she published and her tendency to suppress her individual voice in collectively authored publications, I am certain there are still more sources to be found. It was a time constraint, not a lack of effort, that ended my search. My colleagues were a great source of leads for many of the works. Veterans of the civil rights movement, feminist scholars, and immigration activists knew best where to look for some sources. I also drew upon the help of fellow librarians at public and academic libraries who were willing to assist in locating materials. Trips to San Francisco's Main Public Library and UC Berkeley's Comparative Ethnic Studies Library enabled me to probe further. I am often the person on the other side providing assistance to researchers. For this project I was the researcher and I am grateful for the talent of so many people. I appreciate the assistance of the staff at these libraries helping with details and searches. This effort provides a modest window into the development of Betita's ideas, and certainly there is more to be done. A bibliography is an invitation to a reader to expand her or his knowledge on a subject. In the case of Betita, it is an invitation to a life of action. Sutherland, Elizabeth 1960 Coccioli, Carlo.
