Title: Profile of progesterone and thyroidal hormones in serum during gestation and early postpartum period in osmanabadi goats
Abstract: A study was conducted on six apparently healthy Osmanabadi goats, maintained at Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, Bombay Veterinary College, Goregaon, Mumbai. The age of goats averaged 3.2±0.91 yr at the time of artificial insemination (AI). Oestrus was detected on the basis of visible signs and symptoms and by using teasers. The goat, exhibiting oestrus was served naturally/done AI and blood samples from each goat was collected (Day 0 = Day of AI). Thereafter, the blood samples were collected at every fortnightly intervals during gestation, on the day of parturition and twice weekly up to 14 days postpartum. Pregnancy diagnosis was done after one month using ultra-sonic scanning. The average gestation length and litter size were 148.83±1.93 days and 1.33±0.90, respectively. During major part of the gestation, the progesterone level remained elevated, indicating its requirement in the maintenance of pregnancy. The serum triiodothyronine (T3) increased through day 14 to 28 of gestation. It then dropped and remained almost similar during day 42 to 98 of gestation. The levels slightly increased in a similar proportion at day 112 to 126 of gestation. The concentration sharply declined, almost halved at day 140 of gestation. With regard to serum Thyroxine (T4) except the difference in concentration at the day of oestrus and AI and day 56 of gestation, the levels remained almost similar up to day 140 of gestation. The T3 and T4 exhibited minimum values on the day of kidding. Progesterone followed the trend of T3 and T4. The optimum T4:T3 ratio however, was recorded on the day of kidding. Thus, it could be concluded that during major part of the gestation, the progesterone level remained elevated. T3 did not exhibit particular trend. T4, except the difference at day of oestrus and AI, the levels remained almost similar up to 140 days of gestation.
