Title: Saudi Arabian Ministry of Communications and Its Role in Improving Traffic Safety
Abstract: This feature presents the importance of roadway traffic safety in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Communication's (MOC) role to ensure the highest level of traffic safety on the Kingdom's highway and roadway networks. Improving traffic safety is one of the highest priorities for the MOC. In pursuit of its safety mission, the MOC developed a Strategic Roadway Safety Plan that establishes direction and priorities for ensuring traffic safety. For the MOC to achieve a noticeable and significant reduction in highway-related fatalities and reduction in the number of highway-related serious injuries, the MOC identified and initiated 19 projects in six major areas: drivers, special users, vehicles, highways, emergency medical services, and management. Seven of the projects are briefly outlined: the development of a comprehensive public-information and education program plan; seat-belt use; safety assurance; a safety-review process of existing roads, projects in progress, and planned; the development and implementation of a state-of-the-art accident database; the enhancement of the current high-accident-locations database; and the development of an incident-management program.
