Abstract: The primary business of the Central Japan Railway (JR Central) is the operation of the 515 km Tokaido Shinkansen connecting the three major metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, and 12 conventional lines that form a network with the Shinkansen. The article describes how this highly successful railroad has virtually reached the limits of technical perfection in wheel-on-rail technology. The company also has an unmatched safety record with neither passenger fatalities nor injuries due to train accidents of any kind.
