Title: The Importance of Field-Line Meandering in Particle Acceleration at Shocks
Abstract: We discuss the physics of particle acceleration by shocks emphasizing the importance of the large‐scale fluctuating magnetic field. In particular, we discuss the implications for shock acceleration of large cross‐field transport due to particles moving nearly along meandering magnetic field lines. It is found that this effect significantly aids in the acceleration of low‐energy particles at perpendicular shocks and that there is no injection problem. New results from test particle and self‐consistent “hybrid” simulations are presented that support this.
